What is Lysis of Adhesions for the Shoulder?
Lysis of adhesions is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to restore shoulder motion and relieve pain caused by tight scar tissue within the joint. This condition often occurs after frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), surgery, or trauma. During the procedure, the surgeon removes or releases thickened tissue and adhesions that restrict shoulder movement, allowing for smoother, pain-free motion.
When is Lysis of Adhesions Recommended?
This procedure is typically recommended for patients who:
- Have frozen shoulder unresponsive to non-surgical treatments such as physical therapy or injections.
- Experience persistent stiffness following shoulder surgery or injury.
- Have adhesions or scar tissue that limit range of motion.
- Continue to have pain and restricted movement despite months of rehabilitation.
- Need restored function for daily activities or athletic performance.
How is Lysis of Adhesions Performed?
Lysis of adhesions is usually performed arthroscopically. The surgeon makes small incisions around the shoulder and inserts a camera (arthroscope) and specialized instruments to visualize and release the scar tissue. Tight areas within the joint capsule are carefully cut to free the joint and restore flexibility. In some cases, this may be combined with manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) for optimal motion recovery.
What to Expect during Recovery after Lysis of Adhesions?
After surgery, patients typically start physical therapy within 24 hours to maintain the improved motion achieved during the procedure. A sling may be used for comfort but only for a short period. Most patients experience decreased pain, improved mobility, and gradual strength return over several weeks to months.
What are the Risks of Lysis of Adhesions?
Possible risks include:
- Bleeding or infection
- Recurrent stiffness if rehabilitation is delayed
- Temporary swelling or soreness
- Rare nerve or tendon injury
What are the Benefits of Lysis of Adhesions?
Key benefits include:
- Significant improvement in shoulder range of motion
- Pain reduction and restored comfort
- Minimally invasive, arthroscopic approach
- Faster recovery compared to open surgery
- Enhanced shoulder function and flexibility
