What is Ganglion Cyst Excision?

Ganglion cyst excision is a surgical procedure to remove a fluid-filled lump that typically forms along tendons or joints of the hand or wrist. These cysts are noncancerous but can cause discomfort, limit movement, or affect appearance. The procedure completely removes the cyst and its root to reduce the chance of recurrence.

When is Ganglion Cyst Excision Recommended?

Ganglion cyst excision may be recommended when:

  • The cyst causes persistent pain or tenderness.
  • Wrist or hand movement is restricted.
  • The cyst interferes with daily activities or work.
  • The cyst recurs after aspiration or nonsurgical treatment.
  • The cyst’s size or appearance causes cosmetic concern.

How is Ganglion Cyst Excision Performed?

The procedure is typically done under local or regional anesthesia. A small incision is made over the cyst, allowing complete removal of the cyst sac and its stalk connected to the joint or tendon sheath. The area is then closed with sutures, and a light dressing or splint may be applied to protect the site and minimize swelling.

What to Expect During Recovery After Ganglion Cyst Excision?

Mild soreness, stiffness, or swelling may occur for a few days following surgery. Most patients regain normal hand or wrist movement within 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the cyst’s location and size. Light activities can often be resumed within days, while strenuous tasks should be avoided until cleared by the surgeon. Physical therapy may be recommended to restore strength and flexibility.

What are the Risks of Ganglion Cyst Excision?

Although rare, possible risks include:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Stiffness or soreness
  • Nerve or tendon injury
  • Recurrence of the cyst
